Early life, family, educational background
Singer/Songwriter Brittany Jean Carlson was born on 22 April 1987, in Mercy Hospital, San Diego, California USA, the only child of talent agent and event manager, Lori Carlson and stockbroker, John Carlson. The Carlsons have resided in California’s Carmel Valley, Valley Center and Ramona.
Taking after her father who played both the piano and the trumpet, Brittany learned to play the piano when she was a child. Inspired by poetry, Brittany began writing songs when she was 14, and looked up to performers such as Aerosmith, Queen and Rod Stewart.
When she was 15, she joined a cover band in her high school; her first performance was on the Las Vegas Strip at Sahara Casino. She matriculated from Torrey Pines High School in 2005.
Family’s personal life
Her grandparents were both professional music artists, signed with RCA Records for over 30 years – both performed with Fred Waring and her grandfather also with Perry Como.
Who is Mark Ballas?
Brittany’s husband, Mark Alexander Ballas was born on 24 May 1986; he is an American actor, musician, singer-songwriter, choreographer and dancer, who plays the piano, drums, and electric, bass and string guitar. He is most famous for starring in ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars,” for which he was nominated for an Emmy Award.
From 2005 to 2010, Mark fronted the pop-rock Ballas Hough Band, alongside Derek Hough.
In 2012, he played the lead role of Frankie Valli in the off-Broadway musical “Jersey Boys”, and the same year he also played in the Broadway musical, “Kinky Boots.”
He is one of the professional ballroom dancers on “Dancing with the Stars,” and has won the Mirrorball twice. Mark began competing in the show in the fall of 2007 during the show’s fifth season, and has returned every season until season 25, excluding seasons 22-24 as the timing clashed with his run in “Jersey Boys.” Following his return, he placed second with Lindsey Stirling, celebrity violinist as his partner. Mark did not return to the show for the 26th season, and in an interview with “Closer Weekly” said, ‘I don’t know if I’ll be back in the future.’

Career
Brittany’s stage name is BC Jean. One of her most notable accomplishments is co-writing “If I Were a Boy” with Toby Gad, released on 13 October 2008 by Beyoncé Knowles on her album “I Am… Sasha Fierce.” Brittany had initially recorded the song, but her record label rejected it, so the song was given to Beyoncé.
Brittany enjoys making music in various genres, including dance-pop, pop-rock, Europop and soul. She worked on her debut album with Max Martin, The Matrix, Dallas Austin and others, and was signed to J Records. Regarding Brittany, CEO of Sony Music Entertainment, Clive Davis, released a statement saying, ‘You eagerly wait for a multi-talented new artist to come along like BC Jean. We’re all delighted that BC has chosen us as her musical home.’ On 14 September 2010, “Just a Guy,” was released as Brittany’s debut single.
The RCA Music Group announced on 7 October 2011 that they were disbanding a dozen labels including J Records, but all artists from those records, including Brittany, were moved over to RCA Records.
In 2011, Brittany released, “I’ll Survive You,” then co-wrote “Desperate Girls and Stupid Boys,” which was sung by Kimberly Caldwell and released on her “Without Regret” album in 2011. Some of Brittany’s most famous featured songs were released in 2014 – “Die Without You” and “So Alone” with tvDi, “Not My Revolution” with Itch, and “Happy Holidaze” with Astro Safari USA.
She has also dabbled in some acting gigs – she starred as Harper Walker in 16 episodes of the YouTube web-serie, “Talent,” produced by AlloyTV. Her character is a musician who moved to Los Angeles in hopes of finding fame and fortune through her music career; two seasons of the web-series have aired. In 2011, she recorded and released songs as Harper, such as “Stand Up” and “Anyone.”
In 2015, Mark and Brittany created their pop-rock/indie-pop duo band, “Alexander Jean.” Brittany is the singer and songwriter for the group, Mark plays the guitar, co-writes songs with Brittany, and is the producer. Their middle names influenced their band name, and the style of music is pop-soul-rock, very much inspired by Alicia Keys. Their first co-written song was “Head High,” but their first single was a romantic ballad released in 2016, “Roses and Violets.” Stephan Moccio helped write the ballad; he co-writes songs for celebrities such as Miley Cyrus. “Roses and Violets” was featured on “Dancing with the Stars” and gained a lot of traction, reaching #4 on the iTunes Singer/Songwriter chart, and the top 20 on Billboard’s Hot 100 Bubbling Under chart.
In 2016 their debut EP “Head High” was released; Mark told “Instyle,” ‘It all happened organically. We took our time and spilled our heart and soul into the music.’
The following summer, they released their second EP, “High Enough.” Their song, “Waiting for You” became a success, and garnered them a nomination for Elvis Duran’s Artist of the Month in November 2018. They performed the single on NBC’s “Today Show” which is hosted by Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb, and is broadcast throughout the United States. At the end of 2017, they ended their third tour and began working on new music. In 2018, they released an instrumental song, “Stampede” with violinist Lindsey Stirling. Mark choreographed the dancing in the music, and at the World Choreography Awards in 2019, he won the award for Best Music Video Choreography.
Personal life
Brittany and Mark currently live in Los Angeles, California. They began dating in 2012 after meeting at an online charity concert, hosted by a mutual friend when they performed separately – sales from the tickets were donated. He recalled their meeting during an interview with “Instyle,” ‘She sounded like a mix of Janis Joplin and Stevie Nicks… I was in complete disbelief when the crowd cleared, and I saw a gorgeous blonde.’ Their first date was five and a half hours later.
Mark proposed on 25 November 2015, and the pair married precisely a year later in Malibu, California. They do not have any children, but they consider their dog as their child.
