Early Life

Philip Rosenthal was born on January 27, 1960, in Queens, New York, to Helen and Max Rosenthal. He spent much of his youth in New City, New York, which is located in Rockland County.

He belongs to a Jewish family and he attended Clarkstown North High School, where he became involved in the school’s drama club. He graduated from high school with a scholarship in 1977 and from Hofstra University in 1981.

Career

Phil went on to work as a security guard at the Metropolitan Museum of Art soon after he graduated. Phil began his career as a performer before shifting his focus to production.

His early writing and producing credits include Craig T. Nelson’s Coach and  Baby Talk. He became well-known as the creator of the popular sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond.

He has been in 30 Rock, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and The Simpsons Movie and he hosted the popular PBS TV show I’ll Have What Phil’s Having and later appeared in the reworked version titled Somebody Feed Phil on Netflix in 2018.

Phil has appeared in a number of films over his career, including Spanglish and The Simpsons Movie. Rosenthal is the author of the 2006 book You’re Lucky You’re Funny: How Life Becomes a Sitcom.
