18-year-old American Natalee Ann Hollay gained worldwide notice when, on May 30, 2005, she unexpectedly disappeared while visiting Aruba for her graduation.
Holloway was a Mountain Brook local who had recently earned his high school diploma. The media in the US reported her disappearance extensively. Despite significant searches and inquiries, her remains remain unfound.

On May 30, 2005, Holloway was supposed to take a flight home. She did not, however, show up for her flight. Last seen by onlookers outside an Oranjestad restaurant and nightclub. She was with locals Kalpoe Brothers and Joran van der Sloot.
When pressed, the males denied knowing where she was. According to their claims, they left Holloway at her hotel. Despite being detained three times each, Van der Sloot and Kalpoes were never prosecuted due to a lack of evidence.
The Aruban Police came under fire from Holloway’s parents for how they handled the investigation and questioning of the three men. The parents demanded that Aruba be boycotted. Not many people, but some, agreed with this.
Despite significant efforts, the hunt for Holloway and the inquiry into her disappearance came up empty. The FBI and Dutch authorities both contributed to this. The investigation was closed in December 2007 but reopened in February 2008 after fresh information was found.

In 2010, Van der Sloot was found guilty in Peru of a second murder after making divisive remarks about Holloway. In January 2012, Holloway’s father petitioned an Alabama judge to deem her legally dead. Holloway is still missing, and nobody knows what happened to her or where she is.
