Did you know that JCPenney has been around for over 120 years?

Now that’s longevity… 

Having been in business for well over a century, it’s clear they are passionate about what they do and have a great business model. They offer great products and, most importantly, know how to keep their customers happy and returning for more shopping bargains.

But what about the store’s return policy?

Well, I decided to find out more, including how to return specific items like electronics, jewelry, and fitness equipment, among other household items.

What is the JCPenney Return Policy?

In a nutshell, the JCPenney returns policy is very generous. As of March 2023, most items you have purchased either in-store or online at JCPenney.com are eligible for an exchange or a return within 60 days of the purchase date. 

For a refund or exchange, you must have the receipt or other proof of purchase. Some items are excluded from this generalized policy, and I will touch on that a little later. The refund can only be returned to the original form of payment. 

So if you paid with your credit card, it will need to be swiped through the system to return the money. Or if you paid in cash, then you’ll be getting the amount back in dollars and cents. If you forgot to take your original payment card with you, your refunded amount will be offered via a JCPenney Gift Card.

What If I Don’t Have the Receipt?

Is it possible to return something to JCPenney if you no longer have the receipt? Yes, it is. However, you will not be able to get cash or an exchange. It’s up to the discretion of the store associate and manager, and if it is accepted, your money will be refunded via a JCPenney Merchandise Return Voucher.

What is a JCPenney Merchandise Return Voucher?

If your item is deemed eligible to be returned without the purchase receipt, you’ll be given a store credit. This is in the form of a JCPenney Merchandise Return Voucher. In this instance works differently from when you have the receipt. 

Instead of being refunded the full amount, it’s actually calculated at the lowest selling price within the last 45 days. The voucher can’t be redeemed for cash, transferred, or reloaded. It has no expiration date, and if it is lost or stolen, it will not be replaced, so treat it like cash and keep it safe!

You will also need to have a valid photo ID to complete the return for store credit or to get an exchange. It’s important to note that your ID information will also be logged into the JCPenney database. This has been deemed a necessary safety measure and is in place to monitor the number of returns and exchanges made without proof of purchase. 

What Photo Identification Does JCPenney Accept?

JCPenney accepts a lot of different types of ID. The most important requirements of it are an up-to-date photograph and that it’s valid. 

How to Return Unwanted Items?

The best way to return an unwanted item to JCPenney is to take it to your nearest store. Use the JCPenney Store Locator Tool to help you find the most convenient store. They accept most items; however, there are some exceptions, and these include mattresses and furniture. These large, heavier items have their own set of rules, which I will detail below. 

The other option is to return it by mail. Although, this only applies to orders received from JCPenney online. These orders are usually shipped out via UPS, and you will need to return ship it in the original packaging and pay for the postage. You will need to fill out the returns form, which can be found attached to the invoice. 

How to Return Unwanted Items

If you lose your invoice…

Can’t find the invoice and returns form? Not to worry, you can still return the items via mail by writing down your name, address, phone number, and order number on a piece of paper, and putting it inside the parcel. It would be super handy if you could also include the approximate date of purchase with these other details. 

What are the Exclusions to the 60-day Returns Policy?

Some items can’t be returned as per the standard 60-day and with a receipt policy. These include the following…

Fine Jewelry

If you have purchased a watch or some fine jewelry, you do have the full 60 days to return it, but you must have the receipt. No store credits will be given, or the item deemed eligible for a return if this is not the case. Watches must be returned in their original packaging and with all accessories. It must be in its original state, unworn, and with no signs of wear and tear. 

Meanwhile, Certified Jewelry must be returned with the original certification certificate. Plus, on a very important note. If your item was a personalized or special order, then it is unable to be returned after you have left the store or accepted delivery of it.  

Fine Jewelry

Small Electrical Items

These include items like cooking appliances, fans and lights, small kitchen appliances, air purifiers, garment care, and coffee machines. You have 30 days to return small electrics to JC Penny and will need a receipt to do so. 

Furniture

Unwanted furniture items must be returned within 30 days of purchase or delivery. You must have your receipt to be eligible. There will be a 15% restocking fee plus a non-refundable $85 collection fee when you return one of these items.

 JCPenney advises each recipient to fully inspect the item when it gets delivered to you to ensure no faults or damage have occurred during transit. Any damage or defects must be reported within 48 hours of delivery through Customer Service at 1-800-442-7902.

No returns on special orders…

If your furniture item is delivered through UPS, then it needs to return via the same company and in its original packaging. JCPenney does not cover the cost of return postage, and furniture returns ARE NOT accepted in stores. Also, if it is a special order, you have 24 hours after completing the purchase to cancel it. If the special order item is delivered and accepted by you, there is no option to return it thereafter. 

Mattresses

Mattresses have a very different return policy than the standard offered at JCPenney. You have 120 days to return a mattress purchased from there and need to have the receipt to complete the transaction. You must notify any damaged or defective mattresses within a 48-hour window. 

There is a 20% restocking fee and an $85 collection fee if you are returning the item for a refund. However, if you are exchanging for another mattress, then the pick-up fee will be waived, and only a 15% restocking fee applies.

How was it shipped?

If the mattress was shipped via UPS, you need to return it through UPS in all of its original packaging. If the packaging is unavailable, then the item will be deemed unacceptable for return. You cannot return a mattress in-store. Call Customer Care at 1-800-442-7902 for any issues and help with a mattress return or exchange.

Special Occasion Dresses

All Special Occasion dresses must be returned in their original condition with the green return tag in place. You have 60 days to return this and must have proof of purchase.

Personal Care

 Unwanted personal care items, including all beauty purchases, health care, massage paraphernalia, and grooming merchandise. There is a 30-day returns policy in place for all of these, and of course, you will need your receipt.  

Fitness Trackers and Smart Watches

These items must be returned within ten days of buying, along with the purchase receipt. The item must be in original condition and the original packaging. Unworn and unaltered, with no signs of wear and tear, with all accessories as well. 

Electronics

All types of electronics must be returned to JC Penny within 30 days of purchase or delivery. This includes laptops, TVs, and radios, and refunds will not be issued without a receipt. Any defects or damage is required to be reported within 48 of delivery to be eligible. Electronic items need to be accompanied by all the accessories and manuals. 

Fitness Equipment

All types of fitness equipment must be returned within 48 hours of delivery. You should also inspect your merchandise upon receipt, as defects or damages must also be reported within 48 hours of delivery.

For further questions, customers need to contact Customer Service at 1-800-322-1189. Plus, merchandise needs to be returned with all accompanying manuals and accessories. And make a note that delivery fees are non-refundable, and that returns will be charged a 15% restocking fee and an $85 pick-up fee.

Jewelry Boxes and Armoires

Returns for these types of items must be made within 30 days of purchase and with your receipt. 

Custom-Made Blinds, Shades, and Draperies

You only have 24 hours after the initial transaction to cancel a custom-made order (an order made to your exact requirements, design, and fabric choices). The only other way to return custom-made blinds, shades, or draperies is if the items arrive damaged or have a manufacturer’s defect. Or if the item wasn’t made to your specifications. 

Optical

You have just 24 hours to return any custom-made eyewear or unopened contact lenses to your local JCPenney for a full refund. Whereas after 24 hours, if you find yourself unsatisfied with your purchase, you have 60 days from the date of purchase to exchange any unopened contact lenses or custom-made eyewear. The exchange is for a product that is of equal or lesser value. Please note that open contact lenses and eye exams are not able to be refunded.

Items that are Ineligible to be Returned

There are quite a few items that, once purchased, cannot be returned. These apply to items like face masks, Gift Cards, monogrammed items, baseball cards, and anything that has been personalized, altered, or specially ordered. Also, any type of perishable food item can not be returned.

Items that fall into the body jewelry and ear piercing kits genre are not able to be returned for hygienic reasons. This includes items like nose rings, belly button rings, captive hoops, ear plugs, ear tapers, and eyebrow rings. All sales of these types of items are final, so it’s always best to make sure you are 100% happy with them before you buy.

Does JCPenney Charge a Restocking Fee?

Yes! Larger returns will be charged a 15% restocking fee. For any items shipped out via UPS, you need to return them through the same company and make sure it’s in the original packaging. 

Items returned via UPS mail will incur an $8 restocking fee, and return shipping is also at your expense. If you wish to avoid the restocking fee, then it’s advised to take the unwanted items to your local JCPenney store and do the return in person. 

Can I Return Sephora Products to JCPenney?

Indeed you can. Sephora products bought at Sephora Inside JCPenney, or even at any free-standing Sephora store, can be returned to a JCPenney location.

 For a full refund, return it within 30 days or purchase it and make sure you have the original receipt and form of payment. If you decide to return it after 30 days but before 60 days, you might get a store credit in the form of a merchandise return voucher. Please note these vouchers are only able to be used in a JCPenney store, and no freestanding Sephora stores will accept them.

Final Thoughts

JCPenney has a standard 60 days return policy. This policy covers most items that the company sells; however, some exceptions to this have been covered in detail. Items like fitness equipment, electronics, watches, and mattresses all have their own unique set of requirements to be eligible, and you will need to follow them perfectly to ensure you get a refund.

 Most items purchased online can be returned either by mail or in-store. While items purchased in-store (aside from large or heavy items that require delivery) can only be returned in-store.
